National Walking Month 2017

To coincide with National Walking Month and the third Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Walking Festival in May we organised an historic lunchtime walk around Oldham to encourage staff to get on their feet and be more active.

During the walk staff visited the sites of former cotton mills and were provided with information about the build dates, capacity, closure and often demolition dates as well as learning about what the working conditions were like.

Manor Mill, visible from the rear of Ellen House, was one of over 20 mills mentioned on the trip although only about seven of them still exist. They also looked at other old buildings in the area in particular a number of civic buildings in Chadderton including its former cinema, Town Hall and police station.
